The Earliest Documented Corporal Punishment by Education

The first body-punishment in education is reflected in the earliest literature of the world. When we talk about the earliest literature of the world, the first picture which comes to ones mind would be the clay-tablets covered with cuneiform writing.Indeed, the earliest literature of the world is written on clay-tablets with cuneiform writing in Sumerian, whose linguistic affiliation is not yet established until now.The beginning of the Sumerian civilization with written documents can be traced back to 3300 BCE in Sumer. The bulk of the earliest documents written in cuneiform prove to be economic and administrative in nature. The earliest literary works meant for entertainment is attested from about 2500 BCE.The literary compositions,in which the body-punishment inflicted in the course of education is unmistakably involved, are copies from the Old Babylonian period(ca.1900-1600 BCE).The beginning of such compositions lies, however,in the Neo-Sumerian period(ca.2200-1900 BCE).Undoubtedly, the body-punishment reflected in these literary compositions is the earliest documented punishment of this nature. The present presentation will demonstrate the body-punishments on the basis of the original texts, and track the causes for such punishments.
