Investigating the Effects of Different Conditions on Learners Comprehension and Vocabulary Acquisition from Listening Tasks
This article reports a study on investigating the effects of different listening conditions on university EFL learners comprehension and incidental vocabulary acquisition(IVA).127 students were put in three listening groups: a)listening one time,b)listening three times, and c)inferencing training before listening three times.Listening comprehension was measured by the participants performance in the listening tasks, each of which included five words for incidental vocabulary acquisition study. The participants vocabulary knowledge was tested by three post-tests.ANOVAs were employed to examine the effects and the results showed that the threetime listening groups significantly outscored the one-time listening group in both comprehension and vocabulary acquisition, but no significant group differences were found between the two three-time listening groups. The participants acquired some vocabulary knowledge, especially in terms of receptive and form knowledge. One of the implications is that learners generally need time to process input for listening comprehension and incidental vocabulary acquisition.Regarding inferencing training, the implication is that it takes time for learners to be able to implement the strategy instructed to them.Pedagogical suggestion is also made on the design features of listening texts for the purposes of comprehension and IVA.
