Sister Carrie:A Lady Lost in the Materialized World
Sister Carrie is the first work of Theodore Dreiser who is the great American naturalist writer.It tells a story about a country girl named Carrie who struggles from the lower class till she becomes a famous Broadway dancing girl.The novel reveals Carries struggling process and her journey of mind exquisitely.Theodore Dreiser lived at the turn of the 19th and the 20th century when the doctrines of the consumptionism and hedonism were gaining momentum.At that time,industrial booms destroyed the natural living conditions and particularly the capitalist code of values.The whole society was stifled with avid material acquisition and morbid worship of money and fortune.The personal spiritual ecosystem as well as the whole social spiritual ecosystem was disrupted and endangered.Sister Carrie was only one of the victims.This essay tries to interpret and decipher Sister Carries choice of lifestyle through the extrovert and introvert reasons and emphasizes on the surrounding environment which plays an important role in Carries change of Character to help readers understand better the ugliness of society and human nature.
