Samuel Richardsons Epistolary Technique and His Didactic Purpose in Pamela

In his first novel,Pamela,or,Virtue Rewarded,Samuel Richardson successfully achieved his didactic purpose through the epistolary writing style, avoiding the direct confrontation with his readers. The text narrated by the letter writer,Pamela, the beautiful maid, together with her inner world,is exposed to the readers. In this way,Richardson conveyed the then moral standard to the young female readers. The girls learned through Pamelas exemplary firmness in keeping her virginity. However, what is ironic is that they also learned to keep their virtue to trade for the final reward,a sincerely proposed marriage from the rich man, which forms the dialectic of this moral-teaching novel.
