The Influence of the Cultural Background Knowledge in English Teaching

  It is a phenomenon that many Chinese students speak or write English as Chinese thinking but English form,this resulted from the neglect of cultural background knowledge in English teaching.Because of cultural differences,the same words and expressions may not mean the same things to different people.Although the words accord with grammatical rules,they may not apply in communication,even that they will betray the social customs of the other.Language is a part of culture and plays a very important role in it.The interaction and understanding of one requires understanding of the other.So learning a language is inseparable from learning its culture.As a result of this,it is necessary for teachers to attach importance to the cultural background knowledge,which not only affects listening and speaking,but also impacts on reading,writing and translation in English teaching.Therefore,while learning English,we should know the ideas,customs and behaviors of the society.And also we should learn something about the historical and cultural backgrounds as well as the peoples approach to life and their way of living and thinking.Only so,we can further learn English well,and use it freely and correctly in the reality.
