Experimental investigation of water-lubricated ceramic hydrostatic spindle
In this work, a novel machine tool spindle supported with water-lubricated ceramic hydrostatic bearings is presented.Silicon carbide was used to build the hydrostatic bearing;the aqueous solution of glycerol was used as the water-based lubricant.Experimental investigation was carried out on the spindle prototype in different rotation speed (from 1,000 rpm to 10,000 rpm). The flow rate, temperature rise and reliability of the water-lubricated ceramic hydrostatic spindle were tested. The results shows that: (1) the experimental results of flow rate are in good agreement with the calculated results;(2) compared to ISO VG 2 oil, the water-based lubricant could reduce the temperature rise significantly (up to 66%);(3) the ceramic bearings show excellent reliability and wear resistance in water-based lubricant.
