Introduction This paper explores the issue of identity search associated with English (EFL) learning in China, in the context of globalization and advances in information technology. It attempts to answer the following questions: · What is “identity of the L2 learner, and in what sense is it relevant in the EFL context in mainland China? · What studies have been carried out in this respect? What are some of the major features of learner identities, as found in these studies? · What directions might future theoretical and empirical work take?
