Differences between Learners of Higher and Lower Starting Proficiency Levels as Revealed by Evaluation Results
1 Introduction Language testing and second language acquisition (SLA), two of the fastest growing areas of applied linguistics, were traditionally separate areas with distinctive foci and research methodologies. SLA aims to describe and explain how second language ability develops, with interlanguage itself and the processes and factors that are involved in the development of interlanguage as its loci; while language testing concerns itself more with arriving at a model of language ability and measuring the ability of a given individual or group of individuals at a given stage of development. SLA utilizes methodologies such as the linguistic analysis, descriptive case studies, ethnographic research, and experimental and quasi-experimental designs while the primary methodology for language testing is ex post facto correlational method.
