1 Rationale 1 A Rationale for Teaching Literature in College English The teaching of language and literature is inseparable. There has been some controversy on the place of literature in language teaching. The controversy, however, centers not on whether literature should be used, but always on how it should be used. The opponents often argue about when and where to use literary works, but literature takes varied forms in College English classroom, and its significance has never been ignored.
