The Principles and Practice of Summative Evaluation of CALL Software-The Evaluation of the New Perspective English Learning System
1 Introduction CALL (i.e.computer-assisted language learning) software, including Web-based language teaching systems, plays a vital role in computer-assisted language learning in that well-designed, multi-functioned CALL software can serve as tutors to learners and assistants to teachers. Considering that most teachers in China are not capable of developing CALL software independently and developing CALL software is a time-and energy-consuming project even for those who are capable, it is of high necessity to establish a set of criteria based on which effective evaluation and appropriate selection of CALL software by teachers are possible.
