An Empirical Study on the Correlation between English Anaphoric Pronouns and Chinese Zero Anaphora

1 Introduction Anaphora is a very important phenomenon in linguistics. Merriam Websters Collegiate Dictionary (tenth edition) defines anaphora as “use of a grammatical substitute (as a pronoun or a pro-verb) to refer to the denotation of a preceding word or group of words. That is, anaphora is the relationship that holds between a linguistic expression and a grammatical substitute which takes its reference from that linguistic expression. The grammatical substitute is called the anaphor, and the word or group of words whose denotation the substitute stands for is traditionally called its antecedent.
