Second Language Reading and Researches into its Teaching Policy

1 Importance of background knowledge in reading Reading is defined as the ability to make sense of written or printed symbols and readers use this information to construct a feasible interpretation. For the adult ESL learner, reading is a key to success in higher education. Without reading, opportunities for understanding and achieving educational objectives are lost. Like the first language researchers, second language investigators have also provided evidence that extensive reading contributes to reading development.
