1 The discursive turn in linguistics In linguistics there has long been a tradition which, to adopt the terminology of Chomsky, may be calledsentence grammar. That is, the center of attention in linguistics has long been the sentence. Beyond the boundary of sentence, there is no grammar. Nowadays, however, people are talking a lot about discourse analysis, text linguistics, or discourse grammar. In other words, there is a discursive turn, or a turn to discourse, in linguistics now.
