Adding Potassium and Calcium to the dietary salt as a hypertension-preventive approach in adolescents with higher blood pressure and their family members: a random single-blind controlled trial
Salt play an important role in the development of hypertension, and all the Guideline for Prevention and Treatment of Hypertension in the world regard the restriction of salt as an effective intervention for preventing hypertension. However, the poor compliance of restriction of salt is a stumbling block of primary prevention of hypertension.Epidemiological and clinical studies have shown that potassium intake has an important role in blood pressure regulation in both the general population and people with high blood pressure. The dietary pattern of Chinese people, especially in the rural community of northern china, is characterized by high-sodium intake and lack of potassium and calcium intake. Our Survey demonstrate that the people consume 230 mmol sodium/day but only 35 mmol potassium/day on average, the ratio of K / Na equal to 0.15, which is far lower than that K / Na up to 2.0 recommended by National High Blood Pressure Education Program(NHBPEP) in America.
