An Investigation into a Chinese College TESOL Contezt——A first step towards more conteztnally appropriate use of computers for college English teachers
With the rapid development of computer technologies, the possibilities for the use of computers in education have multiplied.Computer-assisted language learning (CALL) has been widely applied in first language, second language and foreign language teaching and learning. As Davies (2001) points out,“the nature of research in the area of technology and language learning raises a number of fundamental questions(p.1).As a Chinese college teacher of English,I have always tried to improve my teaching by using computers. In this paper,I intend to consider the potential for using computers in my own context and try tO explore what my Chinese college TESOL context is and how it influences my ways of using computers, from a teachers perspective.I base the structure of my investigation on what Johnson (1999) calls“robust reasoning.I begin the investigation by looking at the TESOL context in a Chinese college at both macro-level and micro-level.I then present a case study of my experience of using computers as a classroom EFL practitioner in this college context. My investigation reveals the current constraints on adopting this new computer-based model, both in the macro-and micro-level context.Based on the investigation,I present a practical discussion of how the approach to efficient implementation of CALL needs to be individualised by college English teachers so as to be responsive to the local college TESOL context and how it might be possible to move towards more contextually appropriate use of computers for college English teachers in China.
