Spoken Language Learned from Teztbooks and Evidenced in CANCODE

Chinese English learners tend to set native English speakers as their model to follow. However, spoken corpora reveal how native English speakers speak is not always consistent with what textbooks are teaching in terms of grammatical choices. The article compares data of CANCODE with that of textbooks and discusses the ways of using spoken corpora in ELT context. It consists of six parts. The first part of this paper describes the teaching context the author is in and the needs of the EFL learners. The second part reviews the issue of using authentic and invented examples in the ELT context and what their advantages and disadvantages are. In the third part, the term native English speaker is examined and how it is interpreted is discussed. Examples taken from CANCODE are discussed in the fourth part, showing the spoken language that conversational textbooks mean to teach and that of real corpus data. The fifth part postulates the possible differences between them. The last part deals with the issue of using corpora of spoken and written English to inform the design of textbooks and dictionaries and its implications for language teaching and learning in China.
