MEMS Sensors for Automotive and Consumer Applications

Over the last decade MicroSystems-Technology (MST) has proven to be the basis for a viable industry. So far this industry is still dominated by the automotive field, which is driving high volume demands for a large variety of different application, e.g. pressure sensors for engine control, accelerometers for restraint system applications or chassis control, yaw rate sensors for vehicle dynamics and rollover sensing and many others. This paper describes the development of the MST-based product portfolio at Bosch and gives examples for recent developments on pressure sensors and yaw rate sensors. As widely discussed, at present the MST is moving out of the automotive field and moving into various new applications. New applications can be found within the field of Consumer Electronics, Information Technology, Communications and other areas like Health Care and Life Sciences. Within all potential products the mobile phone with its extremely high volume is definitively the most promising application acting as the current driver of various new developments. Based on the established automotive background Bosch is now targeting these emerging markets for MST-products. In order to approach the new markets in the appropriate way, a new entity, the Bosch Sensortec was founded to serve the applications areas outside the automotive field. It is important to take into account the different market behavior and demands to be able to address the right issues and to be a successful supplier for the upcoming markets.
