A Novel Latent Cyclotriphosphazene-Containing Imidazole Hardener for Epoxy Resins and Its Application in Carbon Fiber Reinforced Composites

  In this work,a latent imidazole hardener(SMICP)for epoxy resins was synthesized by the nucleophilic substitu-tion reaction between 2-methyl imidazolium(2MI)and hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene(HCCP)in the presence of triethyl-amine as acid-binding agent.The chemical structure of SMICP was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy(NMR),elemental analysis and mass spectroscopy.The SMICP shows excellent latency towards epoxy resins at room temperature compared with 2MI.The results of dynamic mechanical analysis(DMA)measurement indicate that the epoxy resins cured by 3.0 wt%and 3.8 wt%2MI and SMICP show glass transition temperatures of 165℃and 187℃,respectively.Compared with the carbon fiber reinforced composites(CFRCs)based on 2MI-cured epoxy resins,the CFRCs based SMICP-cured epoxy resins show comparable interlaminar shear strength(31.7 MPa),higher flexural strength(615 MPa)and flexural modulus(62.9 GPa).
