Effect of Different Spacer Monofilaments on the Compression Properties of Weft-Knitted Spacer Fabrics
Weft-knitted spacer fabric is a kind of novel cushion material which contains two outer layers and spacer layer. The spacer yarns connected upper layer and lower layer are main bearing components, but there are few studies investigating the properties of spacer yarns. This paper mainly studies the effect of several common commercial monofilaments(PET,PA6,PBT and PE)as spacer monofilaments on the compression properties of fabrics, and the effect of the morphologies of spacer monofilaments during knitting and compression was also investigated. The compression stress at 40%strain,residual strain and energy absorption were evaluated for the compression resistance and compression resilience of spacer fabrics from the 50 cycles of compression stress-strain curves. It was concluded that PET fabric had the best compression resistance and capa-bility of energy absorption because of the high young's modulus, but the inferior compression resilience lead to the poor dura-bility.The best compression resilience of PA6 and PBT fabrics is attributed to the excellent tensile recovery of the monofila-ment.Knitting and compression could damage the surface of PE monofilament by forming cracks, giving rise to the worst compression resistance and resilience. In addition, this work contributed to the exploration of relationships between spacer monofilaments and spacer fabrics.
