Fabrication of Grafted Lignin/Poly(Vinyl Alcohol)Fibers

  Lignin,as the second abundant resource on our planet,widely distributes in cell walls of wood,grass,wheat straw and so forth.However,due to its three-dimensional,random and complex structure,together with the existence of numerous rigid benzine rings,lignin has been regarded as byproduct in paper pulping industry.Herein,an effective chemical modifica-tion,graft copolymerization,is introduced to increase the polarity of lignin,further broadening the application.CaCI2-H2O2 initiating system was utilized to trigger the chemical reaction and acrylic acid(AA)was chosen as the monomer.Fou-rier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR)and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy(NMR)proved the success of graft copolymerization.Besides,Gel Permeation Chromatography(GPC)result showed that the weight-average molecular weight was increased from 1 043 g/mol to 1 333 g/mol.By gel spinning technique,grafted lignin/poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA)fibers were fabricated.The final tensile strength was 694.7 MPa,Young1s modulus was 10.46 GPa and toughness was 19.39 J/g.
