Effects of Thermal Aging on the Ballistic Performance of Unidirectional Aramid Fabrics Targets

High-performance fibers and fabrics have been widely employed in civil and military applications. This research ex-plores the ballistic performance of the stacked cross-plied composite fabric(SCCF)and cross-plied laminated panels(CLP)after thermal aging. The two types of targets were made of aramid unidirectional fabric(UD fabric)and were subjec-ted to 1.1 g fragment simulating projectile(FSP)impact after 0,2,4,8,16 days thermal aging. The thermogravimetric a-nalysis(TGA)and scanning electron microscope(SEM)were used to character thermal decomposition patterns of UD fab-ric.We found that the thermal aging changes the mechanical and physicochemical properties of the SCCF as well as its ballis-tic behavior. The CLP have good heat stability and stable ballistic performance due to their compact structure. The approach we proposed can be employed to predict the performance of aramid materials for long-term use.
