Preliminary Study on Plasma Cleaning Technology for Ancient Textiles

　　Ancient textiles are precious and fragile,and at the same time have great research value.However,many ancient textiles are either stained during unearthing process or in storage.So far,most of the cleaning methods for textiles are wet treatment with chemical soaking,which can easily damage the substrate textiles to a certain degree.Plasma treatment is a dry,indirect,low cost and environmentally friendly process and therefore is adopted in this study for treatment of silk fibers and cotton fabrics stained with dust,tea,grass and soil stains.It is found that silk fiber surfaces can be etched by the plas-ma.The dust is largely removed from the surface of the fabric.The tea,grass and soil stains are partially removed.Thus,it is possible to completely or at least partially remove the stains from textiles with plasmas which could potentially be used for cleaning ancient textiles made of silk and cotton.
