Comparison of Recycled Polyester Fabrics and Cotton Fabrics in Dong Embroidery
Liping County, located in Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture in Guizhou Province,is an old rev-olutionary base. The Dong people who have lived there for a long time have created Dong embroideries with strong ethnic characteristics. However, the threads and fabrics in traditional Dong embroidery are relatively poor in mechanical strength, wear resistance, and color fastness.Their production is also found to be environmentally unfriendly due to water-based dyeing and finishing process. Therefore,in the current study,we propose to use recycled dope colored polyester terephthalate(PET)yarns and fabrics to replace traditional cotton yarns and fabrics in Dong embroideries. The tensile strength, wear re-sistance and rubbing color fastness of the two types of fabrics are measured and compared. It is found that the recycled PET fabric has 5.9 to 4.6 times higher tensile strength, substantially higher wear resistance and 0.5 to 1.5 higher color fastness than those of the Dong fabrics, proving that it is feasible to replace the traditional Dong fabrics in Dong embroidery. It can al-so be more environmentally friendly to use dope colored recycled PET fabrics to replace cotton fabrics in Dong embroidery since no water-based dyeing is necessary.
