Religious Nature Aesthetics in the Tang Dynasty of China and Its Influence on the Spirituality of Literati Garden
The spiritual and aesthetic values of nature have been recognized and protected in the World Heritage system since Cultural Landscape theory was introduced as a landscape assessment methodology, which focuses on the role of cultural traditions in the landscape. This has resulted in the understanding of Chinese traditional landscape culture. In fact,Religious Taoism and Zen Buddhism that flourished in the Tang Dynasty of China precisely made the literati a grasp of the spiritual and aesthetic values of nature. Therefore, nature aesthetics in this period is put forward and expounded based on the philosophical and religious thoughts.Specifically,Religious Taoism and Zen Buddhism require a great deal of perception to realize the intangible quality of natural surroundings rather than the tangible form.It means that the religious landscape is not a real natural environment, but a way to deal with the relations between human and nature.By this method of achieving the landscape values, the literati found they could develop a feeling for natural beauty in a world of art and imagination, especially in the gardens built by their own hands. As a result,Literati Garden is not a villa in the wilderness any more but a house garden in the city.It is the spirituality of Literati Garden that transforms physical surroundings into spiritual landscape. To some extent,Literati Garden may enlighten the contemporary assessment and management of heritage landscape values.
