Adaptive Landscape Characteristics of Rural Settlement:A Case of Weizhou Island in Beibu Gulf
As a volcanic island, the landform of Weizhou Island was formed by the accumulation of volcanic debris, its dwelling environment used to be extremely harsh. After the long-term producing and settling by human being,Weizhou Island has formed special adaptive landscapes of rural settlements.Through field research, literature review, field interviews and historical satellite map collection, combining comparative analysis, this article trying to explore how the topography influences site selection, different types of manufacturing and the landscape systems for preventing wind damage, and summarizing three features of adaptive landscape:(1)sites selection of settlements affected by different types of manufacturing, which has close relationship with various topographic units;(2)the special volcanic terrain causes different population carrying capacity, with the background of increasing immigrant populations, lead to the discrepancy of patch and density;(3)multi-level adaptive landscape systems that resisting multi-directional wind damage.Through the case study, this paper trying to have deeper understanding of the settlement landscape characteristics of a specific volcanic island, and exploring the ecological wisdom and significant values of traditional settlements.
