Historic Study of"Lǐ hòu"or"Ichirizuka"as Mileage Landmark

In Japan, mileage landmarks called"ichirizuka"(一里塚)were constructed at every ri(里,a unit of distance equal to approximately 3.927 km at that time)on all major highways about four hundred years ago. While the term"ichirizuka"is often translated into English as"milestone",they consisted of mounds and trees rather than stone monuments. However, this study focuses on their landscape value instead of their role as distance markers. Therefore, the alternative phrase"mileage landmark"is adopted in this study. The origin of ichirizuka must be"lǐ hòu"(里堠),which were constructed in China under the Western Wei Dynasty(西魏)when Chang'an(长安)[modern Xi'an(西安)]was the capital of that state.Nevertheless, while Japanese ichirizuka are frequently described in Chinese web pages,no references to the relationship between ancient lǐ hòu in Western Wei and Japanese ichirizuka appear to exist. It is a pity that the heritage of lǐ hòu has been forgotten. In Japan, while the word ichirizuka is widely known, the number of actual ichirizuka is decreasing. The lǐ hòu or ichirizuka is not merely a distance indicator but also a valuable landscape element and important element of cultural heritage, which merits conservation efforts. The history and present condition of the ichirizuka are surveyed in this study, and some forgotten events and misunderstood tales are recounted.
