In recent years,an increasing number of parks and green spaces have been built in the cities. However, lacking elements of local culture, they gradually become too similar fail to become integral parts of their surroundings.Landscape, which is the habitat of culture, cannot be ignored when talking about local culture, especially open spaces which are significant cultural elements of the city.In this paper,Kyoto and Xi'an,two cities with similar backgrounds but in different countries are used to study how city parks can reflect and represent the local culture nowadays.By reviewing the development and current situation of city parks and green spaces, all of which are studied and classified according to their backgrounds, types, visual forms and other aspects,a lot of similar features in the open spaces of these two cities are found.Further, through statistical analysis and visualization of the collected information, this paper makes a more intuitive comparison of the cultural situation of parks in Kyoto and Xi'an.Through this study, local cultures can attract more attention to and be better used in urban construction. Moreover,it can arouse more discussions on how to protect local cultures by keeping them in the urban open spaces.Lastly, identified advantages and disadvantages of the cases could also provide guidance for future urban construction.
