RCC DAMS FROM BEIJING TO KUNMING VIA SANTANDER AND ZARAGOSA
When the first RCC dam Symposium was held in Beijing in 1991,there were only 65 completed RCC dams in the World. There are now at least 825 completed RCC dams,a very significant growth in the method of construction. This number is been added to at a rate of between 35 and 40 RCC dams each year.China has by far the largest number of completed RCC dams, approximately 240,or just under 30% of the total.Over the past 40 years of RCC dam construction,it is estimated that over 350M m3 of RCC has been placed in dams.By far the greatest proportion of the volume of this RCC,approximately two-thirds,has been high-paste content RCC (i.e.with a total cementitious content of over 150 kg/m3).Similarly,over two-thirds of the pozzolans that have been used in RCC dams has been low-lime (ASTM C618 Class F) flyash. One of the greatest advantages of RCC dams is the speed of construction.Unfortunately,it seems that very few RCC dams, possibly less than 10%,have taken full advantage of this potential speed of construction.Nevertheless, there are examples of RCC dams that have taken advantage and these have generated many hundreds of millions of dollars worth of power ahead of schedule. Some modem RCC dams have become far too complicated and it is recommended that the design of RCC dams should revert to the original concept of simplicity and speed.
