STUDY OF COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH FOR SELF-PROTECTED UNDERWATER MORTAR IN FRESH AND SEA WATER

Self-Protected Underwater Concrete (SPUC) was developed from the technology of Rock-Filled Concrete (RFC).SPUC has the benefits of reducing cement loss, more friendly to marine environment with better flowability. The study of compressive strength of the mortar for SPUC is presented. The mortar was poured into fresh and sea water mixed with Underwater Protective Agent (UPA),which works as anti-washout admixture (AWA).Actually,UPA is different from the previous AWAs,as it is water soluble organic polymers that is incorporated to the water environment not to the mix and improves concrete washout resistance through changing features of water instead of increasing concrete cohesion when placing the concrete under water.22 tests were conducted to evaluate the strength of the samples of the SPUC mortar at 7 and 28 days. Results illustrated that, samples which were poured in fresh water achieved more strength values than sea water samples. Both samples of fresh and sea water recorded less strength values comparing with the reference samples on the air due the severe pouring process in the test. The mortar broke into segments during pouring process, resulting water infiltration and strength loss.It was also noted that the reference samples cured in fresh water have higher strength than those in sea water.
