RCC AND HARDFILL DAMS.SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES

The Hardfill Dam (HFD) is a low-cement content mix placed in a symmetrical faced structure that follows many similarities with respect to materials and construction methods with Roller-Compacted Concrete (RCC) Dams.ICOLD has now created a distinction between these two dam types. The HFD is no longer included in the new ICOLD Bulletin on RCC Dams (No.176) and is now considered a variation of a new dam concept called Cemented Material Dam (CMD) for which three new Bulletins are being prepared, one dedicated exclusively to Hardfill. This paper discusses the similarities and differences between Hardfill and Low-cementitious content RCC (LCRCC) and provides guidelines and recommendations for the selection of one or the other type of dam.The paper is focused on specific features impacting the dam design such as quality and availability of materials, capacity of the dam foundation,in-situ quality, dam lay-out and construction methods.
