CHALLENGES TO THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF LARGE DAMS IN THE HIGHER HIMALAYAS
The effort to harness the huge hydropower potential of Nepal is increasing day by day.At present, hydropower projects totaling 2500 MW is under construction and this progress is becoming the base of development of large hydel projects.Study of large dam projects, though started few decades ago,is taking its pace now and consequently the challenges in the design and development of the hydropower projects with large dams are coming to the surface. The major challenges identified are mainly due to large variations in topography, hydrology, geology, seismicity, and sediment. This paper presents the challenges faced in the design of three dams, each of height greater than 100m,at three distinct topography and geology in Nepal. Two of the dams are located on the same river in the western Nepal and the third one is in the eastern Nepal. The main challenges dealt in the design are the, thick overburden deposit, high PMF,large sediments, high seismicity, and very steep topography.
