DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND EVALUATION OF A CHALLENGING RCC TRIAL PLACEMENT FOR SITE C PROJECT
Site C is a power generating station that is currently being built on the Peace River in northeast BC,Canada. The 1.8 Mio m3 RCC Buttress and Dam is one of the main parts of the civil works. In a preliminary stage of the construction a Trial Placement has been built to evaluate the properties of the mixes on real scale conditions. At the same time the trial has been also a good opportunity to train several construction methods. One of the most specific features of this trial is that it had to be built indoor and not in open air conditions due to the extreme low ambient temperatures in the area.At the time of building the trial (December 2016) outside temperatures reached below-30℃.The paper will focus in the evaluation of materials, the design of the concrete mixes and the alternate methods proposed to form the faces of the structure that requires high-strength air-entrained concrete. The measures taken to overcome the extreme outside conditions at the time of construction of the trial are also described in this paper.
