CONCURRENT CONSTRUCTION OF RCC DAM BODY AND SPILLWAY FACING CONCRETE

This paper discusses the essential construction methods for spillways of RCC dams and provides a condensed summary. The traditional two-stage (or separate) procedure and the novel concurrent procedure (including stepped spillways) for the construction of spillway conventional concrete facing and RCC dam body are reviewed and commented. The strengths, benefits, downsides and limitations of these methods are discussed. After deep examination of the concurrent construction procedure,it is indicated that this state-of-the-art practice is advantageous and promising. The concurrent construction method could be accomplished, achieving a seamless and densely compacted interface between the facing and body of RCC dam, which results in the reduction of costs and time as well as quality improvement owing to the elimination of the 1st-stage concrete steps in the two-stage procedure. The application examples demonstrated the feasibility of the procedure. The technology is helpful for the designers and contractors of future RCC dams.
