CONSTRUCTION OF RCC DAMS IN HEAVY RAINFALL REGIONS
Rainfalls pose special difficulties in the construction of RCC dams.The adverse weather condition affects RCCs quality,physical and mechanical properties.The efficiency and progress of construction is seriously impacted due to the frequent suspensions of the construction and subsequent treatment works.For this reason,this paper systematically deals with the subject and is dedicated to providing a wide-ranging guidance to the design and construction of RCC dams in heavy rainfall regions and other regions during rainy seasons.The related methodology and specifications are reviewed,including preparatory works before construction begins,modifications of RCC mix,technical arrangements of construction crew and equipment/materials during rain and treatment works right after heavy rain as well as quality control.The best practice,recommendations and research results from various projects,institutes and initiatives are summarised.Discussions are presented on the basis of the authors experiences.The paper provides a reliable snapshot of the topic and is useful both for designers and for construction engineers to ensure the progress and quality of construction while minimizing the loss caused by rainfalls.
