MWACHE-THE MOST SUCCESSFUL TRIAL MIX PROGRAMME FOR AN RCC DAM EVER?
The Mwache Multi-Purpose Project,to be constructed near Mombasa on the coast of Kenya, will contain the first RCC dam in East Africa. An outline design undertaken by a Firm of Consulting Engineers with no experience of RCC dams, concluded that Mwache should be a traditional concrete gravity dam, because they could find no locally-available pozzolans in Kenya.Luckily, the final design was undertaken by a Joint Venture of Firms that did have experience of RCC dams and several locally-available pozzolans were found and after an extensive Trial Mix Programme, several sets of mixture proportions were developed for a wide range of combinations of cementitious materials. These mixture proportions are amongst the most efficient and economic,if not the most efficient, ever developed for an RCC dam. This clearly shows that by employing Firms of Consulting Engineers without the necessary experience is counter-productive and also that the design of the mixture proportions for RCC dams should be undertaken by the Designer, because the Contractor will not have the time, nor probably the expertise,to develop those mixture proportions during the Tender Period. In addition, the Mwache Trial Mix Programme clearly showed that different combinations of similar cementitious materials can result in completely different performances.
