PRECOOLING EFFICIENCY IN ROLLER COMPACTED CONCRETE DAMS

  In massive Concrete,heat will be generated due to the hydration of cement.The generated heat will be trapped in hardened mass concrete and internal heat will increase.Precooling of fresh concrete is one of the measures to reduce the peak temperature.RCC dams will be constructed with a traditional layer thickness of 30cm.Precooling systems are used to decrease RCC placing temperature.Precooling systems are using power and energy to produces ice or chilled water and have their efficiency.Beside of this fact,a huge amount of precooling energy is wasted during production,spreading and compaction.During many projects it has been found that there is a need to calculate precooling efficiency in fresh concrete temperature in addition to calculation of required fresh concrete temperature.Precooling efficiency factor is necessary,so PRE (called precooling efficiency) to calculate efficiency of precooling system after compaction is introduced in this paper.PRE will not encounter precooling waste during spreading and compaction,because this part of wastes depends on RCC exposure time and ambient temperature.Also,a formula for precooling efficiency is proposed to choose an optimum fresh RCC temperature with higher efficiency in the RCC projects.
