Nematode Research in Fiji, Cambodia & Myanmar

  Fiji,Cambodia and Myanmar are all developing countries,and agriculture is an important sector to the countrys economic development.Agricultural products,such as rice,cassava,sugarcane,ginger and others have played a major role in those countrys GDP growth,national income and export earnings.Nematode are common pests causing problem to agriculture.For example,nematode can cause big yield losses in the field and quarantine problems for export.However,there is apaucity of research on nematode in those countries.In order to help these countries to improve their nematode research and diagnostic capabilities,three projects were conducted in Fiji,Cambodia and Myanmar,respectively,from 2016 to 2019.The works conducted included nematode research on ginger corps in Fiji,and nematode pest lists for seven agricultural crops in Cambodia.Besides,nematode basic trainings to the researchers from Agricultural Department of Fiji,Cambodia and Myanmar were conducted,which helped them in nematode basic research and also improving their diagnostic skills.Those work further demonstrated the importance of the collaborations,indicating that there is the need on nematode research in those countries.Therefore,further collaboration funds will be of great helpful for their researchers to enhance their nematode diagnostic skills.The Belt and Road initiative would have been a potential funding source to explore.
