Upscaling of large industrial anaerobic plants for energy and resource recovery
Innovation is the proof of a new technology concept in full scale.Upscaling from theory to the first practical application therefore plays a dominant role for innovation. The successful implementation of basic considerations on the scaling up process will be demonstrated using 3 examples of large industrial anaerobic plants with energy and resource recovery. In order to minimise the technologic and economic risk in full scale application of new technological concepts including the design procedure online and onsite pilot investigations play a dominant role. With these investigations the adaptation of design and operation to the very specific case of application can be achieved. This is especially important for the complex relationship between the industrial production process, the anaerobic technology, the energy and resources recovery and the economic competitiveness which is also strongly influenced by the risk of technological failure. As a conclusion it will be discussed to which extent knowledge and experience from the first successful application of a new technological concept to other site specific conditions can be transferred and how it can be derived whether onsite/online pilot investigations are beneficial for risk minimisation or can be avoided.
