Accurate modelling of key physicochemical variables in anaerobic digestion requires activity corrections

In this paper,a generalised framework to calculate the physicochemistry considering activity correction by ionic strength is presented. The errors incurred by neglecting this correction were assessed for a typical anaerobic digestion scenario. The importance of the committed errors is shown, particularly for the ratio between intermediate and partial alkalinity (a key control variable in anaerobic digestion),where the magnitude of the errors can reach over 20%.Errors of relative importance (~5%) were also found for other relevant variables such as ammonia or hydrogen sulfide inhibition as well as the biogas composition.Given the significance of the errors,it is recommended to include in the models the activity correction by ionic strength for two main reasons: (i) it is a better modelling practice at marginally higher computational cost and (ii) it prevents overfitting of other parameters for observations related inaccurate physicochemistry.
