Development of agro-industrial biogas project in African continent: opportunities and challenges

Biogas technology is known to all worldwide.Since its first introduction in African continent in the 1950,interest in biogas technology in Africa is a resurging phenomenon. With the urbanization and development of centralized farming,agro-industrial biogas project (AIBP) came into being in Africa, like what happened in Asia especially China. This study will discuss the definition of AIBP,introduce the development of AIBP in Africa. The potential for AIBP will be analysed and calculated for African continent.Opportunities for developing AIBP include: huge resources potential;economic and social reform (urbanization, industrialization and modernization),urgent energy demand, heavy environmental pollution stress and strong international organization involvement.Meanwhile, the challenges faced are: insufficient policy incentives, technology and economic barrier, shortage of standards and regulation, logistics of feedstock and digestate application. It needs to address not only technology implementation, but also social acceptance, economic affordability, maintenance issues and, increasingly, environmental considerations.
