Ammonia inhibition and acclimatization during the anaerobic digestion of swine manure at high solid concentrations
Ammonia inhibition has been an intractable problem for the anaerobic digestion (AD) of protein-rich substrate,e.g.,animal wastes,at high total solid (TS) concentrations. In order to get more insights into the inhibition process to generate effective counter measures, batch experiments at 37 ℃ were carried out on AD of swine manure at four different TS concentrations,4%,8%,11% and 14%,respectively.The experimental results showed that the release of ammonia rapidly proceeded in the first two weeks at all four TS concentrations.Furthermore, there was a positive proportion between released concentrations of ammonia nitrogen and original TS.As is expected, the high concentration of total ammonia nitrogen (TAN),more than 3 000 mg/L,led to not only ammonia inhibition but also acclimatization stages for up to 7 weeks at all three higher TS concentrations.During the whole AD process, three distinctive volatile fatty acid (VFA) evolution stages were observed,i.e.,the accumulation of all kinds of VFAs,the utilization of acetic, butyric and valeric acids while further accumulation of propionic acid, and the utilization of propionic acid.Methane yield initially rose with influent concentration to a maximum value of 303 ± 23 NmL per gram volatile solids (VS) of swine manure added at 8% TS.However,at the higher TS concentrations with TAN up to 5 086 and 6 324 mg/L (the corresponding value of free ammonia nitrogen,FAN,were 576 and 1 090 mg/L,respectively),the methane yields were depressed by approximately 10% and 30% compared with its maximum value, respectively.
