New insight into the enhanced high solid AD performance of dewatered sludge by thermal hydrolysis: specific organic matter degradation and taxonomic, functional and metabolic patterns of microbes

Two lab scale high solid anaerobic digesters fed with untreated sludge (R1) and thermally hydrolyzed sludge (R2) were operated to investigate the influence of thermal hydrolysis on the degradation of specific MOCs,the taxonomic and functional dynamics of microbiomes,as well as their correlation with metabolic pathway during high solid AD of dewatered sludge.R2 was found to have better running performance with enhanced biogas yield (+45.7%),and VS reduction (+41.3%) which was mainly attributed to the enhanced biodegradation of protein (49.0 %) and hemicelluloses (25.0 %).Referring to the reason of this augmentation, the enhanced solubilization of dewatered sludge caused by thermal hydrolysis resulted in the different taxonomic dynamics of bacteria (hydrolysis, acidogenesis and acetogenesis) instead of archeae (methanogenesis) in digester. And the pre-treated dewatered sludge was more appropriate for both bacteria and archaea to grow with an order of magnitude more in population.Along with the changed microbial community in R2 compared to R1,there was significant increase in relative abundance of functional genes involved in amino acid, carbohydrate metabolism and methanogenesis.
