Anaerobic co-digestion of food waste and paper waste under mesophilic condition: effect of mixture ratio

This study presents the results of anaerobic digestion (AD) of food waste (FW),as well as co-digestion with FW and paper waste (PW),which was conducted in a lab-scale continuous stirred-tank reactor (CSTR) at 37℃.The effect of FW∶ PW ratio on co-digestion stability and performance were investigated at around OLR of 14.0 g-VS/L/d and the mixtures having the ratio of 80∶20 and 60∶40.FW could be digested stably with the methane yield of 0.56 L/g-VS and CODer removal efficiency was 79.7%.At FW and PW mixture ratio of 80∶20 and 60∶40 (on the basis of TS),the performance and operation of the digester were maintained stable, with decrease of VFAs and ammonia. This study confirmed that co-digestion of FW and PW,with the increase of PW content, could slightly suppress biogas production but have little impact organic matter removal efficiency.Adding PW into FW digester is an interesting strategy for ammonia concentration control.
