Mitigation of volatile fatty acid inhibition on anaerobic digestion from kitchen wastes via ammonia control
In recent years,a great deal of attention has been paid in increase of efficient anaerobic digestion on the treatment for kitchen wastes, which may decline environmental pollution and achieve energy regeneration combining biogas prouction. However, volatile fatty acid (VFA) inhibition on anaerobic digestion process is hardly avoided under high-solid conditions.Ammonia prevents pH drop, which is also toxic to anaerobic digestion system,at different degrees with a wide concentration range. This study attempts to relieve VFA inhibition through controlling ammonia concentration. The results showed that the anaerobic digestion system with an ammonia content of 1,500 mg L-1 improved VFA inhibition efficiently.Relative to control, more than 7.3% methane,a stable pH between 6.8 and 7.2,and less VFA accumulation were achieved in this system, suggesting greater recovery of methanogenic activity than its toxicity.
