Sulfate-reducing mediated bioelectrochemical removals of organic substance and iron in hydraulic fracturing flowback wastewater
Treatment of flowback wastewater from hydraulic fracturing for shale gas extraction was studied in a sulfate-reducing mediated microbial fuel cell. The removal efficiency of COD and total iron were 72.9±3.6% and higher than 83%,respectively.An increasing power density was observed with a maximum value of 2544±250 mW/m3.As sulfate reduction caused by sulfate-reducing bacteria produced more sulfide (HS-and H2S) in open circuit, the generation of FeS fine beause of supersaturation of sulphide prohibited the removal of iron from precipitating FeS.The simultaneous removal of organic compound and heavy metal in anode chamber of sulfate-reducing mediated MFC provides a promising approach for the treatment ofwastewater containing organic substance, heavy metal and sulfate.
