Humic acid inhibition of anaerobic digestion: Impact of microbial community

The impact of microbial community composition on humic acid (HA) inhibition was studied. The test conditions included a combination of two inocula with different model substrates (protein and carbohydrate) at HA concentrations of 0 to 2.0 g L-1 at 37 ± 1℃.The study showed that HA inhibited only hydrolysis and not methanogenesis.Only hydrolysis of carbohydrate was affected and not protein, likely due to selective inhibition of substrate and/or specific enzyme. The results suggested that the inhibition is likely caused by enzyme inhibition. The study also showed that the inhibition is reversible within the HA concentration range studied. However, the recovery rate varied with inoculum. The study showed that inoculum with higher bacterial activity and diverse bacterial community has better chance of avoiding HA inhibition.
