Enhanced anaerobic digestion of activated sludge, food waste and their mixture by a highly efficient enzymatic pretreatment
A fungal mash rich in various hydrolytic enzymes was first produced in situ from food waste, and was used for the ultra-fast hydrolysis of food waste, waste activated sludge and their mixture for enhanced anaerobic digestion. Results showed that 15.8 g/L of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) and 104.3 mg/L of free amino nitrogen (FAN) were produced after 8-hour pretreatment, together with 31.2% of volatile solids (VS) reduction. It was also found that the methane production yield of mixed waste activated sludge and food waste with the pretreatment by the fungal mash was 3.4-and 2.3-folds higher than that of the waste activated sludge without and with the pretreatment.A total 69.7% of VS reduction was achievable in the proposed integrated system with the enzymatic pretreatment.
