High solid anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge from oxidation ditch processes under various temperature conditions
Centralized anaerobic digestion of dewatered sludge from oxidation ditch processes (OD) and other waste biomass such as kitchen garbage (KG) is a promising energy recovery technology for small facilities. The applicability of dewatered sewage sludge (DS) from OD to anaerobic digestion with simple operation, including lower temperature conditions and hyperthermophilic pre-treatment at 80℃,was investigated by continuous and batch experiments.B iogas production of DS was 0.1-0.2 LN/gVS-added,and that from KG was 0.7 LN/gVS-added.Co-digestion of DS and KG enhanced biogas production.Viscosity of digested DS was quite high, but simple operation without mechanical mixing can reduce operational energy.Biogas production was observed even under lower temperature conditions (15-30℃),although the production rate was lower.Hyperthermophilic pre-treatment at 80℃ improved the biogas production by 20%.A cultural test confirmed that the digested sludge can be used as a fertilizer. The results proved that the centralized anaerobic digestion system under the various temperature conditions is useful for sludge management in local cities with decentralized small facilities, including OD.
