A rational way of applying sulfidogenic anaerobic digestion in saline sewage and sludge treatment

The existing sewage treatment works (STWs) composed conventional activated sludge (CAS) and anaerobic digestion (AD) processes have been developed for wastewater and sludge treatment over 100 years. These traditional technologies could not satisfy global wide challenges in nowadays. This study investigated the possibility to develop an innovative,high-rate and low-cost sulfur cycle-based sludge treatment technology-sulfidogenic anaerobic digestion,to upgrade the existing STWs.Our results elucidated that the sulfidogenic digestion can be compact as the sludge retention time can be as short as 5 days, meanwhile with high rate of sludge reduction (0.5 ± 0.25 kgs/m3/d).Moreover,the end-product-dissolved sulfide is capable of augmenting the mainstream autotrophic denitrification. In summary, the sulfidogenic anaerobic digestion process can be beneficial to mainstream and sludge stream treatment simultaneously with a rational way of usage. The merits of sulfur-cycle technology should be expanded to other industrial applications as well.
