Fate of antibiotics during sludge pretreatment and anaerobic digestion processes

  Research on fate of antibiotics in sewage sludge treatment system is inadequate,and most studies mainly focused on the removal efficiencies of various antibiotics.This study investigated the degradation and solid-liquid distribution of antibiotics in sludge pretreatment and anaerobic digestion processes.Three commonly used sludge pretreatment methods were compared,including ultrasonic,alkaline and thermal hydrolysis.Twelve antibiotics belonging to four categories (Quinolone (QNs),Sulfonamide (SAs),Tetracycline (TCs) and Macrolide (MLs)) with higher detection frequency in wastewater treatment plants were selected as target antibiotics.All pretreatments had significant improvements on the solubilisation of antibiotics,being consistent with the organic matter solubilisation.Ultrasonic pretreatment didnt influence the total amount of antibiotics,while total amount increased after alkaline pretreatment.Except for TC and CTC,other antibiotics increased after thermal hydrolysis.The release of intracellular antibiotics and the thermal decomposition of antibiotics resulted in the different changes of the amount.Ultrasonic and alkaline pretreatment had no obvious effects on the distribution of antibiotics in anaerobic digestion.Thermal hydrolysis promoted the dissolved concentration after anaerobic digestion,and the TCs were degraded more sufficiently.For MLs and QNs,single anaerobic digestion had a better removal effect compared with pretreatment-anaerobic digestion groups.Dissolved antibiotics increased after pretreatment-anaerobic digestion,especially QNs,indicating that the degradation of antibiotics was mainly limited by the biodegradability of antibiotics,but not the solubilization rate of antibiotics.
